Page 4 of 4 I was shocked when one of my high school friends called in excitement. “I am going to be a grandmother,” she cried happily. It took me several seconds to close my mouth and stop looking like a goldfish out of water. While I stammered out congratulations, I realized that I WAS out of water – if one of my friends was about to become a grandmother, then I was next! Of course, it will be awhile before that happens. We started our family many years after our friends had kids hitting puberty. Lauren and I are lock stepped in our ages – she loved to tell people, “I’m going to be five, and my mom is going to be forty-five!” Now, she knows better than to say, “I’m turning ten and my mom is turning 50.” It just does not have the same ring to it. The fact that 50 is a nice multiple of 10 now has a new meaning. I am grateful to be living my life, with lessons relearned and hope renewed that I can make a difference. I will celebrate life with the joy of a child discovering a new thing for the first time. Laughter and love will be my constant companions, to chase away the wrinkles and gray hairs that continue to appear despite my best efforts. And I will say with pride, “I just turned 50!” and not cringe inside. Just don’t send me black roses on my birthday! 1958 The Year
