To enjoy irises for many years, it is imperative to dig up and separate the rhizomes every three to four years. If the bed becomes too crowded, the plants will cease to bloom. This is a good time to trade rhizomes with your family and friends so that coveted "Black" can bloom in your garden too. A variety of iris rhizomes can be found at local home centers for a reasonable price but this is not near as much fun as visiting an iris farm, such as Argyle Acres, just north of Fort Worth off Interstate 35W. The display garden is open to the public from noon to 5:00 pm daily through April 27. There is also an area of cut blooms on display for the mobility impaired. Waxahachie residents David and Pat Smith have given over a large portion of the backyard of their adorable cottage on West Main Street to an iris garden. Recently David invited iris lovers to stop by and view his gardens in full bloom. David hopes that he and many other interested local residents can convince the Waxahachie City Council to designate the iris as the official city flower. One of David's goals is to see civic plantings of these hardy blooms in parks so many more people can see and appreciate the beauty of this historic flower.
